Useful information about your Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise is a breed of small dogs that are described as light-colored with long, fluffy, curly and silky fur.  Often used as stuff toy models, the bishon frise are known to be the most cuddly, adorable and among the gentlest and fine-mannered of dog breeds.    The name of the breed literally means curly lap dog.  They usually come in light colors of white, apricot or light grey.  Their long curly white fur distinguishes them from the other Bichon sorts.  Because of their long hairs, these breeds are usually harder to take care of as they would need daily grooming by brushing and regular coat trimming to maintain their rounded appearance.   Their coat is not seen as a constraint for considering the breed because Bichon Frise have hypoallergenic  fur and are known have less health issues compared to other more delicate breeds.  However, some of them are prone to watery eyes, skin and ear problems, epilepsy and dislocated kneecaps.  Constant grooming and care must also be given to prevent flea bites.

A descent of the Barbet, Poodle or the Water Spaniel, these lap dogs are known to come from the Mediterranean and may be traced as far back as 300BC.  It is a member of the popular Bichon family which were divided into four groups: the Bichon Malais, Bichon Bolognais, Bichon Tenerife and the Bichon Havanais.    It was said that the early ancestors of today’s kind have been travelling with sailors from one continent to another.  These dogs were used as barter items for food and other items which made some of them favourites of European voyagers and royalties alike.  Some were also utilized as boat dogs and preferred companions of Spanish sailors.  Their cheery round eyes were known to perk up weary sailors and put smiles on their tired faces.  In fact, they made excellent pets for well-known nobilities like King Henry III and some other aristocrats.  A famous painter named Goya even painted artworks that included the early Bichon dogs.  However, it was not until in 1955 that the Bichon was imported to the US.  And it was just less than five decades ago that the Bichon Frise made it to the American Kennel Club’s list of recognized dog breeds.

The Bichon Frise is said to make the most ideal pet because it truly likes human company.  This charming dog is known to be very intelligent and highly trainable because it loves to please its audience.  And because this dog is highly sociable, owners like carrying them around.  Although they are not known to be barkers, they can also make keen watchdogs as they can easily be trained to identify an intruder.

Since these dogs are very outgoing, they need to be walked regularly preferably with a pack of other dogs.  As they make good playmates for children, the Bichon Frise would usually love working out on a spacious yard where they can exercise and play around well.  Regular exercise would also make them less prone to behavioural problems and anxieties.
